Police are investigating six fires — including three in one day — that have flared up in the area since mid-June. The fires, which have ranged in size from 200 square feet to 4,500 acres, were reported on June 14, June 18, July 13 and July 15.
Police ask the public to report any suspicious activity, especially in the vicinity of fires or dry brush. Anyone with any information about the fires or suspicious persons is asked to call the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
Those who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
